OMAHA, Neb., July 10, 2018 - Omaha Symphony Board Chairman D. David Slosburg announced today the appointment of Jennifer Boomgaarden to the position of President and CEO of the Omaha Symphony. Boomgaarden, currently the Executive Director of the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra (SDSO), will begin her new post September 4, 2018. She succeeds James M. Johnson, who left Omaha in April 2018 to become CEO of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. Veteran arts administrator David J. Hyslop has been serving as interim CEO since Johnson’s departure and will continue in that role as Boomgaarden assumes her new position, assisting in the leadership transition.
In the 2017-18 season, which spanned 38 weeks from September 2017 through June 2018 and encompassed 55 concerts, paid attendance for Omaha Symphony performances at the Holland Performing Arts Center and Joslyn Art Museum was 70,261 - a new record. This is an 8.2% increase over last season. Including attendance at education programs, community engagement events, and free concerts, more than 121,000 people attended the Omaha Symphony in 2017-18.

Why look up to see the stars? At the Holland Center on Friday night, the Omaha Symphony let audiences simply close their eyes and enjoy Gustav Holst’s “The Planets.” Andrew Grams returned to conduct. He was buoyant with energy as he led the orchestra through a mostly thrilling program.

You cannot put a price on authenticity. At the Holland Center on Saturday night, Vanessa Williams gave a priceless and genuine performance with the Omaha Symphony at its 2018 Gala.
Resident conductor Ernest Richardson led the orchestra through a review of Williams’ pop hits, Broadway highlights and album favorites.
Johnson: “I grew up in a place where there weren’t orchestras around every street corner and it wasn’t accessible. When I first heard an orchestra as a teenager, my world changed. The sound, in fact, just the tuning note of the orchestra was unlike anything I had ever heard. And then of course, the music these musicians made, un-amplified, acoustic music, nothing in between the listener and the instrumentalist and a conductor to shape the sound, that changed my world.”
Singer and actor Vanessa Williams has been in theatrical films, Broadway shows and television series. She has had numerous top-10 hits. She’s been nominated for Grammys, Tonys and Emmys, among other honors. She performs live concerts in large halls and more intimate settings.

CEO of the Omaha Symphony James Johnson is passing the baton as he enters his last month with the Omaha Symphony before moving on to lead as Chief Executive Officer of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. For the last seven years, he has brought new life to the Omaha Symphony and new meaning to their relationship with the community. As a leader and someone who is always looking for new opportunities, I was eager to find out when and where his musical aspirations began.
