Around 500 students joined the professional singers, musicians, and conductor of the Omaha Symphony in performing on Sunday afternoon. Students from OPS, Lincoln, Papillion LaVista, and surrounding communities have been practicing for months to sing the choral masterpiece "Requiem" by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
KVNO's Melissa Dundis interviews Maestro Steven White on conducting the Omaha Symphony in Symphonie Fantastique: “I think that the great thing about great music, the great thing about great art, is that you can analyze it to death and it holds great interest to analyze and wonderful to think about. But if the music itself, is not the compelling thing, then what’s it all about?”
The last show of the Omaha Symphony’s season will weave spellbinding tales of adventure.
Starting Friday, June 3rd, the Omaha Symphony will close out it’s 2015-16 season with Rimsky-Korsakov’s dazzling showcase for violin and orchestra, Scheherazade. Conducted by Music Director Thomas Wilkins, the final MasterWorks concert of the season will feature Susanna Perry Gilmore in the title role as the gifted storyteller.
Castanets, a concerto, and a chamber orchestra walk into a museum.
The Omaha Symphony’s first Joslyn concert of the season transports the audience to the Iberian Peninsula with selections from Robert Gerhard and a man known as the Spanish Mozart, Juan Crisóstomo de Arriaga. Also on the program is the “Violin Concerto No. 2” by Sergei Prokofiev, featuring Concertmaster Susanna Perry Gilmore as soloist. Gilmore says the concerto should be well suited to the smaller ensemble and intimate atmosphere at the museum.
Four emerging composers will premiere new works in Omaha this Saturday following a weeklong master class with a Pulitzer-, Oscar- and Grammy-winning composer — and you can witness some of the creative process as it unfolds.
The Old Market is certainly known as Omaha’s happening place. No surprise, then, that it’s a site for something new, entirely fresh: a concert on May 16 at Kaneko of music of today, works in progress, written by people still emerging into the light. They are composers in their mid-30s, whose studies continue even while their careers already show promise. They are the focus of Fresh Ink, a seven-year project fostered by the Omaha Symphony Orchestra dedicated to making sure such creations flourish and prosper.
Martin Short's long career included stints on SCTV and Saturday Night Live, as well as appearing in many movies; such as, "Father of the Bride" and "Three Amigos". He will be appearing with the Omaha Symphony this Saturday night (4/18) at the Holland Center for the Symphony Gala.
Jodi Benson, Disney Legend and voice of Ariel in The Little Mermaid and Barbie in Pixar's Toy Story films, reflects on her career with Chris and Ricky from Star 104.5's Morning Show. Benson will appear with the Omaha Symphony in The Music of Marvin Hamlisch: One Singular Sensation, Jan. 31 and Feb. 1.
