Program Info

  • BARBER: Overture to The School for Scandal

  • BRITTEN: Four Sea Interludes and Passacaglia from Peter Grimes

  • SHAW: Entr’acte

  • COPLAND: Rodeo

Reflecting a satirical comedy, Barber's overture to The School for Scandal juxtaposes the tumultuous and evocative character of Britten's Four Sea Interludes and Passacaglia from Peter Grimes, which paints a musical depiction of the sea and its many moods as well as the psychological turmoil of Peter Grimes. The performance closes with the inventive and lighthearted Entr'acte by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Caroline Shaw and Copland's energetic depiction of the American West, complete with cowboys, rodeos, and the open prairie in Rodeo.
