Orchestra Stage Manager

Department: Operations Reports To: Operations and Production Manager

Position Summary: The Stage Manager is responsible for proper and efficient management of the Omaha Symphony’s rehearsal and performance sites and equipment. This position serves as the Orchestra Stage Manager for all Omaha Symphony productions and rehearsals.

Position Duties and Responsibilities: Stage Management & Setup

  • Guarantee accurate stage setup per stage plots (chairs, stands, piano/keyboard, percussion, etc.).
  • Execute timely placement of percussion instruments as directed by Principal Percussionist and Timpanist.
  • Serve as Stage Manager during performances: cue lighting, sound, and stage crew; facilitate entrances/exits.
  • Direct stagehands for all required stage shifts during services.

Equipment & Transportation

  • Transport all necessary equipment to Omaha Symphony service sites, including runouts and tours.
  • Operate a straight truck; manage truck rental, maintenance, and fuel.
  • Supervise load-ins and loadouts for all services.
  • Coordinate delivery and pickup of special equipment or instruments.
  • Ensure proper storage and regular maintenance of orchestra equipment and instruments.

Venue & Backstage Preparation

  • Ensure backstage areas are equipped with necessary amenities (water, coffee, uncasing tables, etc.).
  • Maintain safe, well-lit, and organized backstage facilities with appropriate furniture and clear pathways.
  • Arrive early to assess and address potential staging concerns (temperature, lighting, safety).
  • Communicate with the Manager on Duty (MOD) and any other relevant staff to resolve issues during rehearsals and performances.

Collaboration & Communication

  • Coordinate with Artistic Administration, Operations, and musicians regarding special setup needs.
  • Maintain working knowledge of the musicians’ Collective Bargaining Agreement and its application.
  • Attend weekly and monthly staff and production meetings.


Audio & Technical Support

  • Serve as Audio Engineer for education services and lecture events as needed.


Other

  • Perform additional responsibilities as assigned.
  • Occasional travel outside of Omaha area required

Experience and Qualifications:

  • Three years’ experience in management of stage operations, including light, sound reinforcement, video, and stage designs.
  • Experience with orchestra configurations preferred.
  • Basic knowledge of professional lighting and sound equipment preferred. Basic audio engineering experience required.
  • Ability to work effectively and diplomatically with diverse personalities, including Symphony musicians, other staff, conductors, guest artists, stage crew, and house production staff.
  • Ability to effectively manage and communicate to Assistant Stage Manager and stage crew.
  • Excellent communication skills and close working knowledge of standard technical terms, lighting terms, sound terms. Must be able to communicate in person, by telephone, and via radio or headset.
  • Ability to keep track of all business expense receipts and report them monthly.
  • Ability to analyze problems, communicate with them effectively, and assist in implementing an effective decision.
  • Ability to balance multiple priorities, work independently, and collaborate on projects.
  • Computer proficiency including Word and Excel software
  • Flexible schedule with availability of early mornings, evenings and weekends as schedule requires.

Education Requirements:

  • High School diploma or GED required; Bachelor’s degree in music/production related field preferred

Specialized Knowledge, Licenses, Certifications:

  • Driver’s License
  • Ability to drive non-CDL automatic 26’ straight truck in diverse conditions (training can be provided)

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds unassisted; up to 100 pounds with assistance
  • Requires the ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time
  • Ability to withstand loud environments up to 100dB and varying climates and temperatures.
  • 26' straight truck and 15 passenger van

Equipment/Machinery Used:

  • General Office Equipment (Computer, Telephone, Copier, Printer)
  • Carts, dollies, and hand tools (i.e. wrench, drill, screwdriver, etc.)
  • Loading docks, truck lift gates, and garage doors

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Assistant Stage Manager in all areas pertaining to production such as scheduling, load ins, load outs, and orchestra service support.
