The history of classical music is full of brutal stories. Composers driven mad. True loves killed in an untimely fashion. So many weird illnesses.

Before he died at age 31, sick and impoverished, the prolific Austrian composer Franz Schubert completed what would be his finest work for orchestra — his Symphony No. 9 in C Major — only to see it neglected. Initially deemed too long and difficult, the piece eventually earned attention and praise, but only after Schubert’s death. It became known as his “Great Symphony.”
