Almost a decade ago, Marvin Hamlisch rang in a new year in Omaha with a celebratory concert that was part of the Holland Performing Arts Center’s debut season.

It wasn’t just a victory lap for the veteran composer of stage and screen. Hamlisch, lively as ever that night, still had some major gigs ahead of him. Most notably, he collaborated twice with Oscar-winning director Steven Soderbergh in the years that followed, providing the score for “The Informant!” and “Behind the Candelabra.”

The latter aired on HBO in May 2013, nine months after Hamlisch’s death at age 68. The news took many people by surprise. Hamlisch still had performance dates on his calendar; he was scheduled to spend that New Year’s Eve with the New York Philharmonic.
