Picture this: Denmark, by way of Norway. 1868. A 24-year-old composer and pianist named Edvard Grieg introduces himself to the world with the thunderous opening to a piano concerto that to this day remains one of the most popular and instantly recognizable in classical music.

Over the next several decades, some of the world’s most acclaimed composers came out of the Nordic countries. This weekend, the Omaha Symphony celebrates that era, and three of those towering musicians, over the course of two concerts with its Northern Lights Festival — the orchestra’s third multi-night program in as many seasons.
