It's a program bursting with joy and adventure, beginning with a journey to the Peruvian stretch of the Andes Mountains – living composer Gabriela Lena Frank’s Leyendas kicks this program off in a musical exploration of her roots, drawing inspiration from the idea of “mestizaje”: where cultures can coexist without the subjugation of one by the other. Principal Oboe Alexandra Rock takes center stage as she performs Bach’s spirited Concerto for Oboe d’amore, an elegant baroque feature for an instrument that deserves the spotlight. Elgar’s Serenade for Strings celebrates the composer’s ability to write idiomatically for string orchestra, and Britten’s playful Simple Symphony ends the performance on an energetic note.
