CARNEGIE HALL COMMUNITIES LINKUP!
Wednesday, April 16, 2008, 10 a.m.
Holland Performing Arts Center
FREE PROGRAM

National Standards for Music Education: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9

It’s back! Join the Omaha Symphony and New York City’s Carnegie Hall as we bring the inspiring Communities LinkUP! to Omaha for a third season.

LinkUP!, a Carnegie-created, recorder-based music education initiative, teaches basic musical concepts to students in fourth through sixth grade. Modeled on a successful initiative used in the New York City public schools for over 20 years, LinkUP! is a standards-based music education program that increases a student’s performing, creating, and listening skills through a series of sequentially "linked" activities, which include classroom instruction as well as interactive orchestra concerts. The Carnegie-developed curriculum teaches basic musical concepts and music literacy while exposing students to high quality classical music performances by guiding them through exciting composition, listening, and performing activities.

In 2007/08, students will explore the concept of "Theme and Variations" through playing recorders, singing, and visiting with Omaha Symphony musician mentors in their classroom.

THE CONCERT – APRIL 16, 2008
The project culminates in an interactive Omaha Symphony concert held in the Holland Performing Arts Center on Wednesday, April 16, 2008, at 10 a.m. during which students will demonstrate the concepts they have learned by answering questions, singing, and playing their recorders with the orchestra.

Teacher Training:
All teachers wishing to register their classes to participate in LinkUP! are required to attend a teacher development workshop where they will be trained on the Carnegie curriculum. The workshop will be held at Beveridge Middle School on Tuesday, October 9, 2007, from 4 p.m. – 7 p.m.

Musician Mentor Program
Each participating classroom will also take part in the "Musician Mentor" program. As part of this initiative, an Omaha Symphony musician mentor will visit your classroom on two separate occasions prior to the concert to interact with your students and help prepare them for the performance experience.

THE COST = FREE
Grants from the Isaac Stern Education Legacy, a program supported by the U.S. Department of Education, and the Citi Foundation, allow the Omaha Symphony and Carnegie Hall to present this program AT NO COST to the participating schools.

The grant provides:
  • Recorders for all participating students and teachers.
  • Student curriculum books with accompanying CDs.
  • Downloadable teacher guide curriculum books.
  • Accompanying CDs for the teacher guide.
  • "Musician Mentor" program.

Please Note: Grant funding for busing participants to the final concert is NOT included in the 2007/08 grant and will need to be covered by the participating schools.
